Overview
CalSAWS is the new universal Social Services program in the state of California. Alameda County had to migrate all systems and processes to this new system within a span of 1 year, which included hundreds of queries, countless apps and processes. In response to this staggering issue, Alameda County ITD developed a tool called Query Compass to automatically handle this conversion process for internal users.
This tool leverages a complex pathfinding algorithm, which explores and dynamically finds the path between tables to recreate the Join SQL connections. As a user, you have the option to connect tables or even convert old queries.
The produced web application Query Compass removed 85% of the man-hours needed to get queries converted. This tool continues to be an aide which dramatically reduces the knowledge gap for a new system and saves time where the user would have to create connections for new reports. By using this tool, ITD can focus efforts on serving the community and developing new projects with all the time saved.
